A year later, he met Mukesh Gupta, a bookmaker known as “MK,” who offered him $30,000 to convince his team to lose wickets in a test match against India. Cronje didn’t convey the offer to his team but kept the money, rationalizing that he hadn’t done anything wrong since his team had lost the match anyway.

From that point on, Cronje was hooked. He received payments for providing information and continued to associate with bookmakers. Cronje’s most infamous act came during a test match against England in 2000. With the match heading for a draw, Cronje became the first international captain to forfeit an innings, setting a target for England to chase.
