Some of the Most Weird Definitions of what “Home” is to People

What is a home really? Where your family resides? A house you have spent your hard-earned money on? Or a couch where you can crash over binge watching FRIENDS. Home is not just where we live honestly. It has a much wider and deeper meaning to most people. Home symbolizes an inherent comfort zone, an extension of oneself really.

To me, home is where my family is. Although, my childhood bedroom still feels like my only “Real” bedroom, home has majorly been where my family is to me, in whichever part of the world that is.

I believe most people will agree and relate to this sentiment but trust me there are so many people who have the quirkiest and most interesting definitions of what home is to them.

  1. Home is where you are fully comfortable on the toilet seat

As weird and hilarious this may sound, we cannot deny that it isn’t so absolutely true! So many of us wait for hours to come back home to go to the toilet and among many other reasons like public toilets being unhygienic, it is mainly because of the innate comfort of our own toilet that we derive from nowhere else. Although it is usually just am important factor to most of us, to some, it is the sole definition of a “home”.

  1. Home is where you can sleep

Now, to somebody like me, I can almost sleep on a rocky hilltop for crying out loud. But to many people actually, sleeping peacefully is quite a task. I personally know so many people who literally CANNOT sleep for more than three or four hours when they are not “Home”.

  1. Home is where your dog is

After an exhausting day of work when you come home to an animated and excited dog who jumps at you the minute you enter your house, yes that is a happiness nothing else can beat for sure. Your dog or cat or any other pet for that matter gives you a reason to come back home. I remember a friend of mine who was always ready to knock off early at parties, once was the least reluctant to go home. When inquired, she confessed that her dog, Bruno was not home.

  1. Home is where good food is

This literally means anywhere in the world, including a good restaurant that serves great food, is home to some people. How can a restaurant be a home to anyone right? But yes there are people who live to eat and to so many of them a good place that has amazing food becomes their comfort zone so much so like a home.

  1. Home is where your pillow is

This is not to sleep only by the way. Interestingly, some people are oddly attached to their pillows so much that even when they travel, their luggage is stuffed with that “pillow” of theirs, which they CANNOT do without. It is the touch and warmth of the pillow, which allows them to sleep soundly and also function properly when they are fully awake. A sense of “being home” is what this pillow builds up apparently.

  1. Home is where you can walk around naked

Bizarre right? As shell-shocked as I was to hear this, to some people this is what home means. Talk about being comfortable in your own skin! They say a house is a home only when you are free enough to walk around and relax being naked in it. In fact, it releases stress and provides a sense of composure.

  1. Home is where your library is

To all the book lovers, this is what home means. Being one myself, the hardest part of leaving your bedroom and moving to a new one is missing your collection of books that gave you a sense of belonging and longing. Either a five-shelf library or just a bookcase by your bed, a book lover extracts security and peace from their very own version of library.

On the whole, to most of us whether it is the toilet seat, our family or our bedroom, home is basically where our heart lies right? Tell us what home means to you in the comments below.
