Once upon a time in Hollywood was written and directed by Quentin Tarantino and stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt. The movie is certainly a very well film on a technical level, the lighting and shot composition looks fantastic, the sound track choices were enjoyable. The acting was pretty awesome and it is one of the main thing in this movie that hooked me up. one of my favorite things about this movie was how it transcended me back in 1969 and truly immersed me in to this environment and the story. The settings, the locations and the scenery it looks completely perfect.
I really enjoy the chemistry between Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio’s characters and both of their performances were highlights of the film for me. But when it comes to the movie’s story structure it feels a little different. The movie is probably one of the most patient and mature film that Tarantino has made. Most of the Tarantino’s films are relatively upbeat but this one seem to have different goals in his mind.
The movie is about Rick Dalton played by Leonardo DiCaprio, a fading actor in 1960s Hollywood struggling to stay relevant and Rick’s stunt double, best friend, Cliff Booth played by Brad Pitt, who is described “more than a brother, less than a wife.” The film
Cliff and Rick’s bromance is the heart of the film. Most of the movies follows these two characters and their daily lives in Hollywood as we see Rick navigating his way through guest starring appearances on TV movies, taking meetings and hanging out at his Hollywood hills home along with cliff but his home also happens to be next door to Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate played by Margot Robbie, two real life people. In the summer of 1969 Sharon Tate was infamously a victim of the Manson family murders at the very house that is portrayed in the movies and there’s been a lot of question speculating what kind of movie is Quentin Tarantino making here, it’s combining fiction, reality.
The movie is different from his other films and if you watch the trailer of this movie it feels like it’s got this fast pace to it. It feels like a lot of action a lot of fun and it is fun but it’s not the kind of fun that the trailer is telling you.
It’s a big recommendation but however I acknowledge this is different from Quentin Tarantino, it is long, it did feel its length a little bit but the end result was worth it for me and I guess the question is will it be worth it for you.
Did you enjoy the movie?
