Rare Short Stories by Roald Dahl

Being an immense Roald Dahl fan, I always love re-visiting my childhood by reading his children’s books. However, not many readers know that Roald Dahl had also written a bunch of dark short stories. This article consists of some of my most favorite short stories by Roald Dahl. Most of them can be found in books that include a number of his short stories piled up.

  1. Lamb To The Slaughter

    – First published in Harper’s in September 1953

Can be found in the following book: Deception- Tales of Intrigue and Lies by Roald Dahl

‘Lamb To The Slaughter’ is a brilliant piece by Roald Dahl that is so underrated. It is a story about a devoted and loving wife who behaves appallingly after her husband informs her that he wants to leave her. This short story includes thrill, mystery and emotions all rolled into one shocking act by a docile wife. The story leaves you thinking.

  1. Mrs Bixby and the Colonel’s Coat

    – First published in Nugget 1959

Can be found in the following book: Trickery – Tales of Deceit and Cunning

Mrs Bixby and the Colonel’s Coat is an extremely interesting and fascinating short story capturing the theme of trickery. It is a story about Mrs Bixby, a married woman, indulged in an affair with a Colonel and how she finds a way to showcase the rather expensive gift received from the Colonel to her husband. This short story has excitement and engagement written all over it. The concept of trickery is brilliantly executed throughout. I personally loved the experience, especially the ending.

  1. Princess Mammalia

    – First published in Two Fables 1986

Can be found in the following book: Trickery- Tales of Deceit and Cunning by Roald Dahl

Princess Mammalia tells the story of a princess who discovers the power of her intoxicating beauty that can manipulate every man around. Her frolic from teasing the men gradually takes a malicious turn, as she desires something vicious and vindictive. This short story is one of my favorites because of the astonishing climax that made me go all “Wow!” It is a little dark compared to the other short stories I have listed here but it is a thrilling read that keeps you hooked till the end.
